General Stats
77.2% finisher rate (285 finishers, from 369 entrants), the 11th highest in race history
75 female finishers, the MOST in Western States history
Youngest finishers were both 24 years old: Shea Aquilano (female) (21:08:06) and Adrian Koch (male) (22:39:19)
Oldest female finisher is Lesley Dellamonica at 60 years old (27:36:34)
Oldest male finisher is Jan Vleck at 72 years old (29:02:26), becoming the second fastest septuagenarian (70+) finisher in Western States history, only to Ray Piva who ran 28:09:24 in 1998 at age 71.
The race saw it’s first ever native Vietnamese finisher (Ha Thi Hau, 6th place 17:23:47), and first ever native Indonesian finisher (Rini Sugianto, 29:29:03).
The live stream saw (roughly) 1.23 million total live views, over 400k unique viewers (up from 160k last year) and peaked at nearly 45k concurrent views (around Caleb Olson’s finish), both the highest we’ve seen in Western States live stream history (h/t to Jamil and Billy for the data).
Adam Peterman’s 23:09:29 finishing time, when compared to his personal best (and winning time) of 15:13:48, is the third largest gap for a former champion between their fastest and slowest results (7h54m41s) while still in their “racing prime”, only behind to Judy Milkie-West (20:04 in 1984 and 28:11 in 1988, for a delta of 8h7m) and Pam Smith (18:37:21 in 2013 and 28:58:22 in 2012, for a delta of 10h21m1s). Former champions Herb Tanzer, Kathy D’Onofrio and Jim Howard also have larger gaps in fastest v slowest finishing times, but those appear to be purely a function of age (i.e., ~20+ years between those race results).
Men's Race Stats
Caleb Olson recorded the second fastest finishing time in race history (14:11:25) and recorded the first WSER win by a Utahn
This race saw the fastest 2nd place, 3rd place, 4th place and 5th place men's finishers in race history
This race had the fastest men's podium in race history; third place finishing time would've won the race in all but two of the previous editions of Western States
Jeff Mogavero had the fastest finishing time (14:30:11) by a first time runner at Western States
Kilian's 14 years between podium finishes (2011 to 2025) is only second to Mike Morton for longest time between podium finishes at Western States (16 years, 1997 to 2013)
Caleb Olson (2024, 2025) and Dan Jones (2024, 2025) join Rob Krar (2014, 2015), Tom Evans (2019, 2023) and Jim Walmsley (2018, 2019, 2021 and 2024) as the only male athletes to finish Western States under 15 hours at least twice in their career.
Women's Race Stats
Abby Hall recorded the fourth fastest finishing time by a woman in race history (16:37:16)
This race saw the third fastest women's podium in race history, and the third place women’s finishing time would've won the race in all but three of the previous Western States 100 races
Ida Nilsson recorded the second fastest performance by a woman aged 40 or older (and was only second to her own performance in the 2024 race, where she set the Women’s 40+ age group record)
Fuzhao Xiang (2024, 2024) joins Katie Schide (2023, 2024) as the only other runner to have two performances under 17 hours at Western States
Emily Hawgood recorded the second fastest 10th place women's finisher in race history
Anecdotes
From Jeff Mogavero, with regards to his battle with Kilian for third place: “We passed each other twice before Last Chance, and then 20 times between Last Chance and Quarry Road.”
This is amazing!
As a normal runner with her tickets in the lottery, my biggest concern is always not making the cut off!
So for anyone who cares, I played with the numbers (with hopes of reassuring myself I could finish)
22% of finishers finished in Golden Hour
32% finished under 24 hours
It was basically the same in both fields, 23% of women finishers finished in golden hour and 22% of male finishers.
More men finished under 24 hours (34% v 28%).
I’d love to go back and see if this has changed. It’s taking folks years to get into the lottery but are we starting younger?
Maybe in my next recovery week I’ll have a play in the spreadsheet!
Good stuff! I would add to the stats the 8 different nationalities in the Women's Top Ten, never so many. Last year they were 7. Twice in the past there were podiums without Americans (2021 & 2022)
